miso teriyaki tofu steak

you will need

  • 1 block firm tofu
  • 1/3 cup corn flour
  • serve over rice
  • 1 sliced spring onion [to garnish]
  • sesame seeds [to garnish]
  • sauce
  • 3 tbsp itsu teriyaki cooking’sauce
  • 1 sachet miso’easy traditional
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp mirin [optional]
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • thumb of grated ginger
  • 2 cloves grated garlic

let's get cooking

  1. step 1

Halve the tofu block to make two steaks and lightly score the surface. Place between a few sheets of kitchen paper and gently press to remove as much liquid as possible.

  2. step 2

Rub 1 tsp sesame oil over the tofu steaks, then dust all over with cornflour. Pan-fry over medium-high heat for around 7 minutes on each side, until golden and crisp.

  3. step 3

While the tofu cooks, mix all the sauce ingredients together in a bowl.

  4. step 4

Reduce the heat and pour the sauce over the tofu steaks. Turn the tofu to coat, then cook for a few minutes until the sauce thickens into a glossy glaze. Add a little more water if the sauce becomes too sticky.

  5. step 5

Serve the tofu steaks over rice and finish with sliced spring onion and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
